I'm just starting, but I'm already worried that I may be too sedentary with all the studying. I worry about getting deep vein thrombosis. Just wondering if anyone has figured out a way to study without sitting so much.
I feel the same way! Our weather has been horrid with tons of rain and snow so the new years resolution for studying breaks hasn't happened as much as I like. I am not one of those people who can workout at home so I had planned to take a walk before I sit down and then make myself take a break in the middle to go on a long walk with my dog. The other break I am trying to squeeze in, reading something besides homework so I feel like my whole world isn't just studying. ;) Too bad we are not neighbors we could walk and talk about coding. ;) lol
I have a mini trampoline in my office that I get up and jump on from time to time. They say you should try to get up at least every hour.
I also plan on investing in a Varidesk (standing desk) very soon! Graduation present?! ;-)

I heard those exercise ball chairs are supposed to be good too? I like the standing desk idea and the mini trampoline idea.
I frequently just stand up and continue reading. I'm somewhat vertically challenged though, so this may not work too well for taller people.... :O)
Oh, I so hear you on the extra sitting! That was one of my worries about going into coding-- the inactivity.
I try to do all the previously mentioned things, even rigging up a makeshift standing desk. What I can add is that I am also doing exercises by Peter Egoscue ( you don't have to necessarily buy books; he has lots of stuff online) to deal with the muscular results of sitting more -- stiff hip flexors, hunched shoulders, sore neck... He works on posture and function and has amazing results (if you take the time to do it!).
Thanks for all the great tips! Jennifer, I wish we were neighbors. I have a dog, too, so that would work great. Nicki, I did not know what a Varidesk sas, so I had to look that up. Now Facebook is showing me ads for it. It's not as expensive as I thought it would be. Kell, I was wondering about standing and reading, but I didn't know if I would be able to concentrate enough to learn new material while standing. You make me think it would be worth a try. Tracey, I like your idea of a makeshift desk. I think I'll try that until I can afford a Varidesk, and I will check out those exercises.
Concern for DVT. Along with the exercise that the others have been mentioning, use of TED hose is important. Some are very expensive. Get them on line or through your equipment store, or go to your local pharmacy. WalMart has them in the pharmacy area. I bought a couple of pairs of black ones. Not as tight as the white ones I already had at home. The white ones were so tight at the top that I had to cut down beyond the band in order to release the pressure - wasn't an ideal solution, but helped.

FWIW, they have really cute compression socks on Uniform Advantage's website :O)
