Medical Coding Pregnancy Codes/ Module 1

  • I have to ask those who are further along with their Coding studies, will I have plenty of practice in later modules with Pregnancy codes? I took my test today and I was a bit discouraged. I don't feel I had enough practice to get a "feel" of how the 5th digits worked with the questions. Also, can anyone recommend a supplemental workbook or text that will give me extra basic practice?  Thank you!

Hi Debbie,

I am currently at the end of module IV.  Yes, the pregnancy codes do get easier as you go along.  Also, in module IV, there is a Faye Brown book you will absolutely LOVE.  It helps so much and I think this really helps things click.  Just remember, this whole process is all about learning.  You will have some stumbles and down right falls sometimes, but expect it and don't stress too much about them.  Just review your mistakes, make notes and you will see in the end things really start to come together.  I wouldn't worry about supplemental work right now.  Just focus on what you are supposed to be doing in the module you are in.  If it was felt additional supplementation was needed, Linda and Glenda would have included it.  :) You might just confuse yourself if you try and find something else.  I know it IS tempting! :)  Don't worry, there are more exercises as you go along on all of it.  Good luck to you :)

Hi Paulette,

Thank you! I appreciate that you took the time to answer my question and gave me reassurance. I felt I almost "had it" but did not have enough practice in the test. I did get confused a bit on how to code the 5th digits. Thanks for the help!

Also remember that you can ask questions before, during, and after each coding exam!

While you're reading the assigned materials in a section, if something doesn't seem to be clicking for you, that's a good point to stop and ask for clarification.

If you're in the middle of a coding exam, and a few of the questions don't seem to make sense, or you feel like there could be a couple of possible answers but you aren't able to select just one, send an email detailing your thoughts up to the point where you're getting stuck so your instructor can walk you through the process or point out something you might be missing.

After you've finished your exam and received a grade, go back and look up the ones you missed again, trying to reason through how and why the corrected answer should be reached.  If you're getting lost at that step, send us a question!
