ICD-10-PCS
by Liz Th, CPC-A - I received my book today. Do I need to be concerned that the codes are only valid from 10/1/2021 to 09/30/22?
Re: ICD-10-PCS
by Glenda Hickman - Your PCS code book will be just fine for the course. The "valid" dates on the front cover are specifically for working coders. Facility patient charts for encounters occurring October 1, 2021 through September 30, 2022 are coded with this particular edition of the ICD-10-PCS (and ICD-10-CM) code set, even if the coding itself isn't actually done until later. The certification exams work on different schedules. The 2023 ICD-10-CM codes won't be allowed in the CPC exam until January 1st, and the 2023 CM and PCS codes won't be allowed in the CCS exam until May 1st next year (most likely, and we'll cover more about that in Modules III and IV when you get there).
For our course itself, the edition of the codes doesn't make much difference. You will be graded based on the edition of the books you received and you are not required to update any of your books for your studies. Students may need to update at least some or possibly all of the code books once they are ready to take the certification exams, as they can make more of a difference there, but even students getting 2023 editions in the next month may need to do that depending on their pace in the course and the timing on their exams later. We'll start addressing that in Module III when you get to the point where you're ready to start looking into scheduling the CPC exam, so it's not something to worry about now.
