"Medical billing coders With millions of new patients comes millions of bills. And even before those bills come in, the work is piling up for physician and hospital billing offices, which are racing to prepare for the new ways they will have to submit patient claims to insurance companies. Along with the requirements to transition to electronic health records, doctor’s offices also have to comply with a new system of coding the services they provide, known as the International Classification of Diseases, or ICD-10. The system includes a whopping 69,000 diagnostic codes, and physicians will have to submit claims with the new labels starting Oct. 1, 2014, to get paid. Also see: 10 things Generation Y won’t tell you The transition requires IT know-how to build the codes into the electronic record software, as well as workers to label every medical visit or procedure. “It’s like alligator attacks from the left, alligator attacks form the right — the specificity of the codes is astonishing, and not many people are trained to do it,” says Osborne of Staffing Industry Analysts, adding that coders are “one of the hottest” jobs right now. “You’re going to need an army of those now and forever.” There are currently almost 8,000 medical insurance coding jobs posted on the online job board Indeed.com."
