What methods or techniques do you use to get projects or assignments done? I know, some of you don't need any help. You just get in and get your work done because that's what you do. This thread is for the rest of us, unless those of you organized people have help for us. :) Otherwise, no snickering. Nobody's perfect, you know.
When I'm overwhelmed with big projects, sometimes all I can do is to just take a big chunk out of it. I convince myself that I'm not going to do more than that. Sometimes I use a certain number that I'll do, and no more. I might say to myself that I can at least do 15 of these. Then if there happens to be only 3 or 4 more, I'll clean those up as well. It's just get starting that's the hardest part.
I have to break down big projects into smaller bite sized pieces...(How does a person eat an elephant? - One bite at a time). I also set a timer and work on something for a set amount of time - then take a break and switch to something else. I make lists - and cross things off as I do them. It gives me a greater sense of accomplishment just seeing 2-3 things crossed off of a list and helps get me through greater chunks of the project and that same list. I also set deadlines (mini deadlines up to the big one). Once I break down a big project into several parts, it does not seem as big to me and more manageable.
When I get a new deadline, I paperclip together the pages of each chapter to read, and write on the syllabus the number of pages long each chapter is. Then I print out all of the tests to be done before that deadline, carefully returning to the main page or logging out so I don't accidentally submit the blank test. Then using a calendar and working backwards from the deadline (or ideally from an earlier date I want to get finished by), I estimate (one day, two days, etc.)how long it will take me to complete each chapter or test and write it on the syllabus by that chapter or test. This helps me to (hopefully but not always) stay on track well enough not to have to rush at the end. It also helps me feel more in control instead of overwhelmed to see in advance how many pages/how much work has to be done rather than feeling like it's just "a whole lotta work". My personal preference is to work on the hard copies of the tests and then input the answers in one sitting. It's especially gratifying to remove each paperclip as I finish a chapter or place a completed, corrected test printout in my ring binder.
Thats actually a great idea! Thanks! I have no children or job so it's not that I am not organized, but what you suggested is a pretty good idea that i haven't thought about!
Wow! Thanks, Lida! Those are excellent tips.
If it's a multiple day project, I have to work at it every day as much as possible, even if that means finishing early. I just cannot stand to leave work undone, and I am very inertia sensitive. I can get away with one day off, but when it comes to a several day break it is difficult for me to get going again. Even if I can only study one hour that day I will even if I really don't have to because I am the type of person that needs to keep ideas fresh in my mind. If I go three days or more I will have to reread the assignment from scratch. For me it is easier to sit down and plow through a chapter and keep going, rereading where necessary for understanding of course, than to do a bit here and there. I am also trying to get finished in the minimum amount of time while still effectively learning for those exams. For me, more time in school means less money in my pocket via a coding job.
Thanks, Jemi and Laurie! Glad I could be of help!
