I'm in a mess of trouble. Due to me not paying careful attention to the syllabus, I did not realize that I was supposed to start doing the Coding Exercises in Section 3. I thought they were going to be done in another Module (I'm at the end of Module 1). Consequently, my last 2 test scores have been not so great. I have a couple of weeks to rectify this situation. My main problems are these: I did not utilize access to my Instructor in the way I should have. I am either forgetting or not getting some basic Coding rules. Extra characters in particular. I guess what I'm asking is this: What do you guys recommend I focus on to get back on track? My intention is to spend the next few days doing all of the practice coding in the Handbook and then try to focus on whatever it is I need to understand where I'm going wrong. I get the basis of most codes correct, but then I stop. I don't want to give up; i really believe I am capable of doing this. Should I look for a study buddy in my area? I am open to any and all suggestions.
My suggestion Carla is to voice your concerns to your instructor. Maybe back track to where you do understand what you are doing, before you derailed. Everything in your future coursework will build upon you having a good understanding in Module I. Take the time NOW to get your bearings and develop your knowledge base. Your instructor is here to help you so don't be fearful and ask her opinion on how to get this right. Hope that helps. We have all been there.

Carla, please don't give up. Many of us have been in the same boat you are - everything right about the code except for one little detail - and without that tiny detail the whole code is wrong. Sounds like you are on top of figuring out what to do. Sounds like you are aware of the last digit that needs to be added from time to time. Those little rascals slipped through my fingers more times than I can count, and I did try to concentrate about them. But by the time I would get the basic code, especially if I had to struggle, that took so much mental energy that I would forget that last little digit that needed to be added.
About a study buddy, many are the times I wished for one, but I never made the effort. You might want to follow up on your thought about that - seems like it would be a great help.
And as for not doing so good on the test, sounds so much like me (and several others) - but testing in Andrews is not set up for a grade; it's set up so we can see our weak spots and concentrate on correcting our misconceptions or just plain learning how to do it. It seems like it's not a pass or fail with Andrews; it's more of "okay, so you messed up here or there. Now let's get back up and figure it out, learn from it and move on." And if you are like me, it was mess up, get up, try again, over and over and over.
Hang in there Carla. Just take it with baby steps, one little detail at a time. You'll be fine.

Carla,
I thought we were only to do the coding exercises given in the syllaus for each section and the exercises in the book are for a later module. So I haven't completed any of those in the handbook either. Have you done the coding exercises given for each section in the syllabus? I have also just started using the guidelines for review when studying each section which has helped a lot. I would review the chapters in the handbook along with the guidelines and reviewing each question that was wrong to better understand where the errors are like they have set up as given in the instructions for the final exam in section 5. I hope this helps.
So sorry to hear you are struggling :( Every chance I get, I remind people to utilize the instructors!!! Instructor Melissa was a GREAT help to me in Module I. I just started Module II last week. I am taking my first coding exam in this module tonight!!!
In the first Module, the only exercises we were supposed to do were the ones here on the syllabus. The ones in the coding handbook are not going to be done until a later module.
The advice I have is to read the guidelines and rules so carefully... and the info boxes if they are in the subsection. Look next to each code that you are using for your answer on the exam and if it has a little number by it to the left, you need to code to that # of characters. After I do my exams, I actually go back through and verify that I have enough characters for each code and put a little ok by it. I am SO very careful in typing in the correct code also while inputting my answers online. I check and double check before I submit.
Good luck :)
Hi. Carla - in Module I you are only to be doing the coding exercises from the online syllabus, in addition to reading through the Handbook too. The Handbook may seem like a bit much right now, but it is essential to attempt the reading, and when you revisit it in Module IV, you will gain even more clarity as it will be your second time through (at which time you will complete the Handbook exercises). You do not complete the exercises within the Handbook just yet. If you feel you are missing some of the rules/guidelines, careful review of the Handbook and the guidelines at the beginning of ICD-10-CM should help.
Please do reach out to your instructor with questions as well, of course.

I am thrilled to say that with one email Melissa has helped me tremendously!!!! She took the time to look over my exams, see what my problem was and help me correct it! I knew I made the right decision choosing Andrews, and I am reminded of it every day. Thank you to everyone who responded, your encouragement means a lot.
I have discovered that one of my biggest problems was getting so stressed out during my exams because for some reason i felt like I had to get done in a "timely fashion". I realize now that i have been my own worst enemy! It's a new type of learning for me, but even if it has taken me a while to get the hang of it, I am tenacious; I will never give up. I spent the time to make a sign that says "Slowly and Correctly" and it's on my desk.
When the instructor wants you to add more to a test, how do you get back in to a submitted test? Also, how do I start a new thread? LOL. I've definitely taken too much time off!!!

On the test issue, did the instructor tell you to e-mail the answers to her? If she did, you probably received that notice via your personal E-mail. Just reply on that same E-mail. Otherwise, I better let someone else help out here.

Slow and steady wins the race! And the CPC and the CCS and a job!
You can do it Carla!
Thank you Anjali!!!
Bonnie, would you send me an email about this? It depends on the instructions you've been given and which exam you're asking about, so other students wouldn't be able to assist you here. I can look up that information for you and give you a more detailed response by email if you write to me at andi@andrewsschool.com instead!

She didn't say to reply in an email. This is the only email I have so I will just put my answers in an email. I did email her, just waiting to hear back. Thanks for the info on posting a new post!
