I have the ICD 10 CM coding manual published by Optum for 2017. My instructions are to read the guidelines for each section. I am in Module 1 section 3 the digestive system. I went to read the guidelines as instructed but all it says is reserved for future guideline expansion. Am I missing something or are there no specific guidelines for the digestive system. Thank you.
A few of the chapters don't have specific guidelines at the beginning of the chapter. Do pay attention to instructional notes in the categories and subcategories.
Hi Debra,
As you and Marie pointed out, there are a few chapters where the guidelines in the front of the ICD-10-CM code book says "Reserved for future guideline expansion." So, this means there are no written guidelines within the ICD-10-CM code book for this particular chapter. If you are in Section 3 of the syllabus, you'll read about the digestive system as well as general coding guidelines in the Coding Handbook (syllabus says to read chapters 6, 7, and 20 of the Coding Handbook). It is in the chapter 20 reading that you will go over important information regarding some of the diseases of the digestive system and how they are coded. The digestive section is one of the quicker sections, which makes it a nice start at getting acclimated to the books and readings! :)
