I remember the days of reading novels, entire novels in one sitting....now, I sit down with a riviting, mind bending, HCPCS manual to read and abstract information that is put into no real particular order, I guess I should categorize the HCPCS as a mystery book...you never know what will be next or even where you will find what it is you are looking for! Anyone else experience this? My mind has Gone With the Wind! I loved that book!
Debbie,
I am a transcription student and am having a hard time enjoying reading now. I have become so picky about grammar that I find my self editing the book rather than enjoying it. I have always loved reading but there are times I get so frustrated with the errors. Anyone else have this issue?
Debbie,
Oh me too - I've always been a voracious reader. These days it's pretty much confined to the evenings, usually right before bed. I have to read something at bedtime, even it's a bubblegum wrapper. I feel a bit like a bag lady sometimes, because my purse has to be large enough to carry my Nook and my sock knitting, for those odd moments in between errands, doctor appointments, or waiting on the husband. You grab the time where you can find it.

Ayup, same deal. In those halcyon younger days I'd typically read a couple of books a week. Now, between work and school and the rest of the stuff that fills in the cracks (I think they call that Life), I might make it through a book per month or so, with most of that being right before sleep (random plug for the Kobo Glo!)
I sure do miss it... but I think those glorious hours of leisure to read will not return until retirement. --If I make it that far. I get the feeling either the CPT exam or Module IV may be tne end of me.
I'm normally a voracious reader, too, and fond of many kinds of writing, but since starting school and working full-time, I find very little time for it. I download books now so I can listen to them while I walk or work out. It makes the workout time zip by and allows me to get in some reading on the sly, so to speak. (Of course, this costs a lot more than my favorite form of book-getting, which is borrowing from the library, but it's the best I can do right now).
Like you, Debbie, I'm a very picky reader, but that comes from my background as a professional journalist and editor with old-school training in grammar, concision, and ruthless word-slicing, plus an abiding hatred of the passive voice. I still shudder when I come across sloppy grammar or the word "utilize", and generally can't help myself reaching for my imaginary blue pencil to strike out such abominations. On the other hand, if my obsession limits my reading to good writing, then that's a tradeoff I can live with. I'm not a literary snob, but I do insist on good writing, whatever genre or style the author is writing in.
I have to read something at bedtime, even it's a bubblegum wrapper.
LOL Terry, this is me 100 percent!! I cannot fall asleep without reading something and have been known to read the back of a cereal box with enormous interest.
And my boyfriend still laughs about the time I ranted about the incorrect grammar on the FBI warning of a movie we were about to watch.
LOL, Pam, I never got into Harry Potter, maybe that's why!
