Hello Everyone,
I just wanted to put out a question to fellow student coders and instructors. When is the best time to join the professional organizations as a student?
Timing is everything to receive the most benefit of the membership. Student memberships are for one year at a significantly reduced rate. If anyone has any input I would like to hear back. Thank you Lynda Wi
Hi Lynda,
I think it would be beneficial to join the association as a student and also to attend area chapter meetings if possible. There is valuable information meeting and talking to coders as well as networking. It would help you get perspective on jobs available. Chapter members can give you direction in how to get your name out in the coding community to let them know you are interested in learning about other specialties for coders. Being in proximity of those who have a job you are interested in will give you opportunities. Mentoring with established coders will also get you noticed for future jobs. ~ Instructor Lisa
Hi Lynda,
I didn't purchase any memberships until I was scheduling my exams.
Thank you for your input. I forgot about the value of networking and building relationships prior to graduation. This is my first week, so I was consumed with getting started.
That is what I was first thinking was to join when I was ready to test. The previous post brought other intrinsic value to joining sooner to engage myself in the chapter meetings and networking. Thanks for your input.
I would recommend waiting until Module III to join AAPC and Module IV to join AHIMA if you choose to do so. Earlier than that, and you likely won't get as much value from the earlier portion of your membership. While you could attend AAPC meetings, for instance, you wouldn't be earning any CEUs for them and most of the content is likely to go over your head while you're in the first two modules. When you get to Module III, there will be an assignment where you have to start researching AAPC credentials so you can plan ahead for your CPC exam - that's a good time to look into membership as well.

Thanks for your input Glenda. For now, I will just follow the forums on social media to keep abreast of the different issues medical coders encounter and upcoming legislation changes affecting practice.
